johannes Van Vught

In reflection on the human life cycle Johannes van Vugt paints his subjects with a sensitivity for human happiness and sorrow. He often uses classical forms of representation in Western art history, such as the portrait or the human figure. Van Vugt is guided by historical events as well as personal experiences. Working within these frameworks, Van Vugt uses his emotional involvement as a means to critique contemporary ideas about religion, art, history, interpersonal relationships and social identity.

Johannes van Vugt was born in Rijswijk (Nbr.), The Netherlands. He studied at the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten Amsterdam (1980 - 1981) and at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten St. Joost Breda (1981 -1985). After his graduation he received an honourable mention at The National Graduation Expo " Start '85 ". Johannes van Vugt continues to build on his already impressive oeuvre, as witnessed by the wide variety of collectors of his work in the Netherlands and abroad. He has exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions in the Netherlands, Greece, South Korea and France.

The Road is a painting exhibition by Johannes van Vught.

The title of the exhibition  is taken from a poem by Robert Frost “The Road Not Taken”. In the paintings you can find indications of choices that determine our journey through life. In his paintings Van Vugt often refers to his childhood. A growing child has to make choices that can turn out to be good or bad. How we interpret these choices really makes us who we are. We can look back into the past and see which choices have shaped us the most.

The Road is the first Solo exhibition of Johannes van Vught at Gloria Gallery. March 2-21.

Snapshots is a painting series by Johannes van Vught.  Van Vugt has created his own archive by painting his pictures as if they were postcards from the past: the small and serial set up produce a cinematographic character. Some of the works are directly related to his own personal world while others indirectly through the use of other people's photos. And that is what makes this series part of a collective memory.

Snapshots is the first art presentation of Johannes van Vught at Gloria Gallery in a joint exhibition with Lefteris Olympios. February 22 - March 15, 2022
