Andreas Karayanwas born in Nicosia in 1943. He initially studied Medicine at the University of Athens, but soon abandoned the field to devote himself entirely to art. He continued his studies in Painting at Camberwell and the Central School of Art in London, and later pursued Printmaking in Stuttgart, Germany.
His first solo exhibition was held in 1978at the legendary “Ora” Gallery in Athens, marking the beginning of a career that established him as one of the most distinctive and daring voices in contemporary Cypriot art. Since then, he has exhibited in Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Egypt, and Italy, and represented Cyprus at the Venice Biennale (2001) and the Cairo Biennale (2006).
His work is known for its strong sensual and Cavafian undertones, focusing on the human body, interpersonal relationships, and existential reflection. His five‑volume autobiographical novel has received two State Literary Awards, affirming his dual presence in both literature and the visual arts.
On May 26th 2025, Andreas Karayan was honoured by the House of Representatives of Cyprus with the Grand “Stasinos” Award for his lifetime contribution to painting, literature, and contemporary Cypriot culture.
