George Mavros

George Mavros was born in 1955 in Paphos, Cyprus. His father was Kostas Mavros, a knife maker by profession, and his mother was Grigoria Charalambous, of the Kanaris family. He graduated from the Paphos Technical School and enlisted in the National Guard. Finishing his term, he traveled as a sailor on ships. He knew many foreign places, and other cultures and different people. But the smells and the memories of his home brought him back to his beloved Paphos. He married Maria Michael from the Diocese of Paphos, and they had 3 children and 5 grandchildren to date.

THIS IS  OUR CYPRUS

Is  the seventh solo exhibition of George Mavros .

George Mavros chose painting as an art form motivated by the colors and scenes from the Cypriot tradition.

He is inspired by the manners and customs of the last century, by the great holidays such as Easter "Lambri", Christmas, summer, harvest, weddings, and others. Also, from the mountains and the stables of the village, from songs, proverbs, and sayings.

George's painting is experiential and at the same time very narrative. The artist approaches tradition with respect and love. These feelings are reflected in his work. His painting has quite a lot of naive elements with a tendency to render the volume and generally the third dimension.

An element he often projects in the scenes he paints is humor. A sarcastic humor, since it springs from the sufferings of the common man, but also a peculiar, bitter humor that characterizes George himself. A joy that gives his work sincerity and humanity.
